The Flight of the Ants

Sunday dinner was held in the burbs this week. We spent a blissful evening in my BIL's back yard. Turns out he has some excellent bee plants in his garden and he is going to save the seeds for me.

A fierce looking lady bug larva appeared to inspire the entrants of the monster drawing contest.

A hummingbird appeared, attracted by the bergamot and crocosmia.

This is a later blooming variety of California lilac.

We had barbecued salmon, potatoes and beans with dry curry spices, and broccoli served with a lovely Beaujolais. The girls made an apple pie from the transparents in the back yard and a peach and blueberry pie which we gobbled up with ice cream and Alexandria.

While we were outside we happened to see the nuptual flight of the tiny ants in the back yard. Thousands of ants took flight and headed towards the sun, looking like a convention of fairies in the dusk. I was so enchanted I forgot to take a photo.

BIL loves Italian food and he has a green house full of green tomatoes.

This is a large variety of nepeta or cat mint.

Unfortunately grandpa's Bentley broke down on the way home. Fortunately grandma had a cell phone and called BIL for help. Fortunately the tow truck didn't take long to come. Unfortunately we didn't get home until midnight. Just another summer adventure.
