Bumble Scrum

While the boy was at summer camp, I spent a delightful morning at Van Dusen Gardens photographing bumble bees. They are out in full force and some of them are very large, or as the Glaswegians say "SHUGE"!

The artichoke flowers near the entrance to the gardens are like neon mauve swimming pools of nectar.

When the bees are together like this you can see how they vary in size depending on how well they were fed as larva. Some of little runts and others are the giants of the family.

The echinacea were also full of bees and this also seemed a favorite resting place for worn out bees. A retirement home, perhaps? The Betty Ford Clinic for bees?

The powder blue grass behind these technicolor flowers makes this garden surreal.

"Drying out," as they say.

The Bergamot was very popular, attracting the big sexy bees with the long tongues, and of course, the hummingbirds.
