The Schmatta Combers

If you watched The Beachcombers when you were growing up, then you'll be familiar with the little harbor town of Gibson's on the Sunshine Coast. (Cue theme song here.) Hungry Girl and I spent an afternoon exploring the local sights and power thrift shopping.

We took the bus to upper Gibson's to the tiny farmer's market. I think it's very cool that they have a consignment booth for vegetables.

We bought arugula, strawberries, garlic scapes, and snow peas. The buzz at the market was fresh mint: everyone wanted to go home and make mojitos. Next, we walked down to the local Sally Anne and scored big time. I accidently wandered in to the restricted area where they sort the clothes and got a few good bargoons: a coral silk jacket, a polka dot silk scarf, a tank top made in India "with love", and a box of Celtic rubber stamps. HG found a long Chinoise jacket, a smart skirt suit, and a summery dress.

In lower Gibson's we had halibut tacos at the oyster bar on the beach. Consensus was that it was a bit of a tourist trap--overpriced and the food could be much better. The long communal table is beautiful, but exceedingly awkward for both staff and customers to navigate around.

I noodled around in the shops while HG visited the internet café to create her post for Pride Day. There was an interesting hodge podge of antiques mixed with all kinds of chachkas and kipple. I sat in the shade and savored a cappuccino-flavored gelato cone. The theme song from the Beachcombers piped gently through my mind over and over again.
